SLP Celebrates Another Successful Year

Mon, August 01, 2016

The Student Leadership Program held its 2015-16 Year End Celebration on April 28 in Savannah, April 29 in Brunswick and May 10 in Appleton. Students, family members, teachers and community advisers marked the end of another successful year for SLP. The Year End Celebration focused on the student's accomplishments and what they learned over the past year.

"This year, SLP was about building my confidence and learning how to express myself," said Sierra Gant, Brunswick High School student

Rhett Laubach, brain tumor survivor, was the keynote speaker at each site's year-end event. He gave an energetic and empowering message for students to embrace, learn and grow from life's challenges.

"Rhett's message was uplifting and left me wanting to change myself," said Marcus Medema, a student from East High School in Appleton. "I can always do better."

In Savannah, 137 graduating high school seniors were recognized for completing the Student Leadership Program and received SLP honor cords to wear at their high school graduations. The group of graduates will apply the skills they learned as they pursue their future plans, whether that is attending college, enlisting in the military or entering the workforce. Forty-four students received the 2015-16 SLP Student Excellence Award.

SLP Savannah also recognized Dreidre Jackson, a teacher adviser from Savannah High School, and Marini Jackson, a community adviser from Gulfstream, as recipients of this year’s SLP Adviser Excellence Awards.

In Brunswick, four students received the 2015-16 SLP Student Excellence Award, while Raquel Shields, a teacher adviser from Brunswick High School, and Andy Boerger, a community adviser from Gulfstream, received SLP Adviser Excellence Awards.

In Appleton, three students received this year’s SLP Student Excellence Award.
