SLP Students Enjoy Educational Trip to Washington and General Dynamics Headquarters

Fri, September 12, 2014

Gulfstream rewarded 93 hard-working Savannah-Chatham County rising high school seniors enrolled in the Student Leadership Program (SLP) and 28 chaperones with an all-expense trip of a lifetime to Washington, D.C., July 27-30.

The trip focused on leadership and citizenship to help the students continue to develop their leadership identity and experience the important role citizenship plays in being a leader.

The SLP students were excited about the trip and expressed their appreciation:

• "Great way for us to start the rest of our lives."
• "Overall the trip was AWESOME. I am extremely grateful and appreciative of everything SLP has done over these past few days. I'm so grateful for being a part of this organization and this community.”

The students participated in a community service project cleaning up trash along the river at the Rock Creek Conservatory and participating in an SLP wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

At General Dynamics headquarters, executives were impressed by the professionalism exhibited by the students. The students gave a presentation about SLP and how the program has impacted them. One of the presenters was an enchanting hearing-impaired student named Angellia Burnett. Through the assistance of her interpreter, Melinda Ward, she wowed the executives. At the conclusion of her presentation, the SLP students gave her rousing applause in sign language by waving their hands in the air.
